That tells us whether your BFT takes the older cast-iron hinge set or the newer steel weld-on bracket pattern, and those are not interchangeable. For slide gates, the important measurement is the rail-to-gate clearance and the thickness of the gate frame itself. A BFT Icarius mounting bracket comes in both 4mm and 6mm steel profiles, and putting the heavier bracket on a light aluminum gate frame distorts the frame over time. On OEM versus aftermarket: BFT’s own weld plates are well-made but have longer lead times here in Florida. We keep equivalent American-made weld plates and machined hinge blocks in stock that match BFT’s hole patterns, and we document the exact part number installed so a future BFT technician never has to measure twice.

Signs Your BFT Welding & Fabrication Is Failing

• The gate sags at least a half inch at the free edge when open. This is almost always hinge wear or a crack forming at the hinge-to-post weld. The hinge itself may not look broken. The stress concentrates where the hinge plate meets the post, and that’s where the crack starts.
• You hear a faint squeal or grind near the operator arm at the top of each cycle. The arm’s pivot bushing is wallowed out or the weld attaching the arm to the gate is flexing. By the time it’s audible, the metal has been moving for weeks.
• The gate accelerates for the first few feet, then slows before reaching the stop. On a BFT slide gate, this usually means the driven pulley bracket has shifted on its weld. The chain tension changes along the path, and the motor is compensating for it.
• Rust staining runs down from any weld point, especially within a mile of the Intracoastal. In North Miami Beach salt air, a hairline crack shows rust within months. The stain is the tell before the weld fully separates.
• The operator housing vibrates more than it did six months ago. A BFT motor unit is quiet when its base is solid. Vibration means the mount bolts have loosened or the weld under the base plate has started to fail.

What you can safely check on your own: look at the hinge points with a flashlight and see if any weld has visible rust bleeding or a hairline line running through the metal. Wiggle the gate by hand at the free end and feel for play at the hinge pin. That tells you something is wrong, but it doesn’t tell you the fix. What you should not do is grind out and re-weld a BFT bracket yourself. Gate posts and operator arms are under tension even when the gate is at rest, and a weld that fails under load can drop a 400-pound gate on a car, a kid, or you.
